World record holder Sotomayor will be a guest

at Hustopečské Skákání

For the second time, the world record holder and world sports legend Javier Sotomayor from Cuba will be the guest of the international high jump competition at Hustopeče. This very nice and always smiling athlete was first in Hustopeče in 2011 and this year it will be his second visit to our town. Not only a great atmosphere of the competition awaits him, but also a welcome with the mayor of the town at the town hall and training with young athletes from Hustopeče.

Javier Sotomayor was born on 13th of October 1967 in Limonar. Since he was a kid, he excelled in athletics especially in a high jump discipline. At the age of seventeen he jumped over 233cm, but he didn"t get to the Olympics in 1984 because Cuba didn’t participate there (just like four years later in 1988). He first appeared at Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992) and immediately won a gold medal there. He extended his rich medal collection eight years later when he won silver medal in Sydney. However, the most striking achievement of his careerremains setting the world record at  245 cm which makes him the only person to have ever cleared eight feet(8 ft 1/2 in).
